What is Truffle Hunt?
Truffle Hunt is a drafting search tool that helps legal teams find useful clauses inside their existing documents.
Instead of manually opening old contracts and scrolling through them, Truffle Hunt extracts and organises clauses from DOCX and PDF files so you can search and reuse them directly in Microsoft Word.
Think of it as a clause-focused search engine for your own drafting history.
With Truffle Hunt, you can:
Upload DOCX and PDF documents
Automatically extract clauses from those documents
Search across extracted clauses
Search full documents visually
Insert clauses directly into your current Word document
Add strong clauses to your Quality Library
In a way, you can consider Truffle Hunt to be a specialised "Google for legal documents & clauses". Or as your specialised instrument to search for golden nuggets hidden in piles of irrelevant things. In fact, that's where the name and icon come from: finding truffles within a large forest, using a specially trained device.
When should you use Truffle Hunt?
✅ Use Truffle Hunt when:
You remember writing a clause but cannot find it
You want inspiration from real precedent language
You want to search across large volumes of past contracts
Your Quality Library does not yet contain what you need
You want to build a Quality Library gradually
❌ Don’t use Truffle Hunt when:
You expect perfectly vetted clauses
You do not have time to assess clause quality
Your Quality Library already covers everything you need
Truffle Hunt shows what was used in the past - not necessarily what is best.
Two main ways to use Truffle Hunt
1. Search through precedent documents
Most legal teams have a collection of “go-to” templates and precedents (often 200–300 high-quality documents).
Truffle Hunt makes this collection searchable:
Find clauses quickly
Start from a known template
Discover useful documents colleagues rely on
This is usually high-quality content, even if it is not fully curated.
2. Mass-extract clauses from old documents
You can upload hundreds or thousands of historical contracts and extract clauses automatically.
This solves the classic problem:
“I know I wrote this clause before, but I can’t find it.”
However, this approach creates volume:
500 contracts may result in 300 confidentiality clauses
Search results can become noisy
You must assess quality yourself
Mass extraction is fast to set up, but requires more review during daily use.
How Truffle Hunt works
Truffle Hunt has three modes, available through tabs at the top of the screen: Clauses, Documents, and Manage.
Clauses Mode
Allows you to search across all automatically extracted clauses from your uploaded documents. Clauses are typically grouped with similar ones and shown side by side, making it easy to compare different versions of the same type of provision.
This mode is focused on speed and comparison, and is particularly useful when you want to explore alternative wording across a large set of precedents.
Documents Mode
Allows you to search full documents. You can review clauses in their original context, extract specific paragraphs, or even use an entire document as the starting point for a new draft. This mode is more context-focused and helps you assess how a clause fits within the overall structure of a contract.
Although both modes are designed to help you find strong clauses in previously drafted documents, they approach the task differently.
Clauses Mode takes you directly to extracted provisions for quick comparison, while Documents Mode lets you navigate through complete documents to understand structure and context.
They are complementary rather than alternatives. Depending on what you need - fast comparison or contextual review - you can move seamlessly between them.
Manage Mode
Is where you upload documents and trigger automatic clause extraction, preparing your content so it can be searched in both Clauses and Documents Mode.
