Here’s how to decide what to do when you need to update or create contract templates in LawVu.
🔍 Follow the right process
The flowchart below guides you through specific scenarios where you can self-serve update your contract wizard, versus more complex scenarios where you need to coordinate with your Customer Success Manager at LawVu.
You may need to click on the image to view a larger version for better readability.
✅ 🔹1. Are you updating an existing contract wizard?
You may be able to make this change yourself. Please ask LawVu Support for a copy of your coded document. Examples include:
Is the change only to the wording?
→ Yes: Make the changes directly, then return it to LawVu Support.
Is the change just simple formatting or layout-related?
(e.g. changing fonts, margins, or styles - but not content)
→ Yes: Make the changes directly, then return it to LawVu Support.
Is the text or formatting changing significantly, but the logic remains simple or there is no logic?
(e.g. there are no IF statements or conditions - just merge fields)
→ Instead of starting with the coded document, start with a clean copy of your new format or new text. To save yourself making lots of changes to the old coded document, instead insert the relevant merge codes into the new document and send it to the LawVu Support team.
📄🔹2. Complex changes to existing wizards
This requires a bit more coordination. Please reach out to your Customer Success Manager, who will guide you through the process. When thinking about whether you will need help from LawVu, ask yourself the following questions:
Are you adding or changing IF statements or conditional logic?
→ You’ll need some technical help. Please contact your Customer Success Manager so they can connect you with the right person.
→ Highlight your changes and include comments in the document. This helps the team give you an accurate quote for coding assistance.
Are you combining a new template into an existing contract type?
→ You’ll need some technical help. Please contact your Customer Success Manager so they can connect you with the right person.
📌🔹3. Are you creating a completely new contract wizard?
Here’s what you’ll need:
The contract type create form configured in LawVu. This might include LawVu conditional logic in order to set the form to behave dynamically based on earlier answers.
A template document of the file format .docx for automation.
Find the merge codes and insert them into the template document.
If you are going to ask LawVu for help eg with logic, you can apply highlights or Microsoft Word comments to your document:
to indicate format preferences (for dates, currency, uppercase).
to provide instructions on any logic in the document.
🔍How to find merge codes?
Whether you are preparing a new contract wizard, or updating an existing one, you can self-serve and return the document to the LawVu support team. A key step is finding the merge codes for the fields your template needs:
These merge codes are found in the contract type settings.
You might already have many of the relevant merge codes handy in a previously coded document.
If you need help finding the merge codes: Visit the Academy course or Help Centre to learn how to retrieve them.
💡Tips for preparing your document
File format
Your coded document, as uploaded to the wizard tool Formstack, must be in .docx
format.
Output format
Wizards can generate in .docx
or .pdf
. If you’d prefer PDF output, let LawVu Support know. Otherwise, we’ll default to .docx
.
Test Mode
If your document has complex logic or is still being reviewed, we can enable Test Mode, which adds a SAMPLE watermark to generated files. Files generated this way won’t count toward your automation bundle.
Active Mode
For simpler documents, we usually publish directly in Active mode. For complex wizards, we’ll switch from Test Mode to Active once the logic is confirmed.
File naming
File names (not contract record names) can be auto-generated using the format type_datetime.docx
or .pdf
. The date depends on the document’s time zone setting in Formstack. If you need to adjust the timezone, let LawVu Support know.
