Configure AI extraction for your contract types
Before you can extract data from contracts, AI extraction must be enabled and configured by your LawVu Administrator
Go to Settings > Contract Management > AI contract extraction.
Toggle on the fields you want AI to extract. You can enable up to 30 fields.
Fields that are added to the Create form, Contract Details or the Completion form will appear on the extraction page.
Unsupported fields (such as Contract Owner or Urgent) cannot be extracted and will be marked as Not available.
Use the Extract column filter to quickly see which fields are enabled or disabled.
For standard LawVu fields, prompts are already provided, but you may add to it or replace it with your own field prompt.
For custom fields, you can (and should) customize the Field Prompt to improve extraction accuracy. You may also add an optional description in the Field Prompt column to give the AI additional context. This is especially helpful for complex or nuanced fields.
Write Effective Custom Field Prompts
When writing custom prompts, think of them as clear instructions. The AI performs best when it understands exactly what the field represents, where the information typically appears in a contract, and what format the answer should take.
When creating or editing a custom field description, aim to include:
What the field represents - Clearly describe the meaning or purpose of the field (for example, what the value is used for).
Common indicators in a contract - keywords, phrases, headings, or clauses that usually signal this information (for example, “Termination”, “Commencement Date”, “Governing Law”).
How the value is typically expressed - If helpful, note whether the value is usually a date, a party name, a jurisdiction, a number, or short text.

Providing this context helps the AI identify the right section of the document and extract the correct value more accurately.
How AI extraction works
You can manually run an extraction on a contract. Any fields enabled for extraction in the Contract Details form will be automatically extracted.
Who can use this feature?
Anyone with the 'User initiated AI data extraction' permission can run an extraction:
To run the extraction:
Open the contract.
Click Run Extraction.
The extraction runs in the background.
You’ll receive a notification when it’s ready for review.
Review AI Suggestions
Once extraction is complete, click Review Extraction.
A split-screen view will open:
Left side: Contract fields
Right side: Contract document
Fields where AI has found values will be highlighted.
For example, under Other Party, the AI has identified a value in the contract that differs from what was previously entered.
Click the citation link to jump directly to the relevant text in the contract
You can then:
✅ Accept the suggestion
❌ Decline the suggestion
If you decline a suggestion, it is still recorded and can be reviewed later by another authorized user.
Bulk Acceptance
If all remaining suggestions look correct:
Click Accept Remaining Suggestions
Select Mark as Reviewed
This updates all remaining fields at once.
