Most of the time, when working on matters, you're going to want to collaborate with a key person to get the matter completed.

This person is someone we refer to as a 'Matter manager' - another person in the same in-house legal team as the matter owner, or more commonly, someone who works in an external law firm (legal service provider).

How to assign someone as a matter manager?

This can be achieved either during the process of creating the matter - or once the matter has been created.

  1. Assigning during matter creation

2. Assigning matter manager after matter creation:

The people picker +Assign will allow you to select only users with the right role in LawVu ( InHouse Legal or Administrator ). Matters cannot be assigned to Business Users or Contributors.

Do I need to know who to assign as the matter manager?

Most organizations will have relatively close relationships with their legal service providers and therefore they'll know who they want to work with and can select that person from the list.

If you're not sure who best to assign the matter to then you can assign it directly to the legal service provider and they'll take it from there and assign it to someone in their team.

Setting a default Matter Manager/Intake assignment

Administrators are able to set a specific individual or the Intake queue to act as the default Matter Manager for newly created matters. This option is set at the matter type level.

This enables the business to have better control of requests that are coming in from users and how matters are distributed within the team.

To use this feature, go to Settings / Matter Management / Matter types. Under the Settings tab of the specific matter type that you want to appoint the default matter manager, you'll see Matter assignment - click on '+Add' to select the specific individual or select the Intake queue.

Now all newly created matters of this particular matter type coming in from the team will be automatically assigned to the person or Intake you selected.

Creators will have the option to edit it if necessary.
