What are contract types?

The relationship of 'Contract types' to 'Contracts' is very similar to the relationship of 'Matter types' to 'Matters'.

A contract type has initial information that consists of:

  • Name

  • Category (Sales, Purchasing, Commercial)

  • Description

Once a contract type has been created, we can use that to help streamline contract creation and run reporting against, etc.

Process of Creating Contract Groups and Types

Navigate to 'Settings > Contract Management > Contract Types settings and click the 'Add Group' button.

Wait... Why 'Add Group'?

Contract types are stored in groups to make it easier for you to manage them later on.

In the screenshot below, you can see I have an existing group set up called NDA and 3 contract types inside that group.

Now imagine that we have hundreds of contract types - being able to group them makes a lot of sense.

This way, when we create a new 'Contract' we can start by choosing a group - and then choosing the appropriate type from within that group.

Be aware that contract groups are assigned as a contract type is created.

If you wish to move a contract type to another group, you must contact LawVu's team using the support chat feature to request the change.

Adding a Contract Group

Click on Add group option and the below pop-up will appear.

Fill in the 'Name' of the new contract group and click Create.

Now that the new group was created, you can now start adding contract types within the group.

Adding a Contract type

Just click the 'Add contract type' button and the below pop-up will appear.

Fill in the 'Name' of the new contract type and assign a category, and add a description if needed.
The 'Create' button will appear, and you can save the new contract type.

Now that the contract type has been created, you can apply workflow templates to it if you wish.

Changing the contract type after the contract creation

During the lifecycle of a contract, it may become apparent that the contract should be categorized differently or have different data recorded, with fields available in another contract type. Now you can change the contract type even after creation.

To change the contract type, you must be the Contract Owner. Simply select the new contract type from the Contract type field list and confirm the change :
