Creating matters

When you log into the LawVu application, you can easily create matters by selecting the "+New" icon located at the top right corner of the screen, next to your profile. Click on "Matter" from the options available.

A dialogue window will open up, and you'll be able to select a Matter type.

Standard users and Contributors can also create matters through the decision tree set up by their Organization admin using the Business Portal.

Other ways to create matters include:

Creating matters via an URL

As an Administrator, you have access to a direct link to open new matters, that you can share with your users.

Browse to Organization Settings / Matter Management / Matter types and click the Settings tab of the selected matter type.

Selecting Open in Home opens the create form of that matter type so you can log a new matter immediately or use the Copy Link option to share the link with a user.

You can also create matters:

Matter types

Matter types are the foundations of all matters within LawVu. They can be heavily customized to capture the information relevant to you. Think of them as a template from which to build.

Matter types can include custom fields, custom scoping fields, and predefined tasks.
Read more about matter types here.

Note: If you are logged into LawVu as a legal service provider, you must choose the client you want to create the matter for first, and then one of that client's matter types.

Fields

After you've selected a matter type and clicked 'Next', the screen will update and show all of the fields that have been set up for that specific matter type.

All fields marked with a red asterisk are required and must be completed before you can move forward and click the Next button.

The number of required fields is also stated at the bottom of the intake form and will reduce every time a required field value was entered. (Note that this number includes the matter name and excludes all the values that have already been auto-populated.) See the sample clip below:

LawVu contains a rich set of default fields that you can use to customize matter/contracts and ensure you're capturing the right data. Learn about it here.

Custom fields also provide an enormous amount of flexibility for obtaining relevant data that corresponds with your organization's requirements. You can start learning more about them here.

Assigning key roles

The last step in creating a matter is assigning the two key roles, the Matter owner (usually yourself if you are the one creating the matter) and the Matter manager (another member of your in-house legal team or someone from an external law firm).
